FOSTERING TODAY's SOLUTIONS and TOMORROW's WoRKFORCE

DEVELOP cultivates the next generation of leaders and Earth observation users. We work with communities and organizations to address environmental and policy concerns through the practical application of NASA Earth science information.

DEVELOP conducts feasibility studies that bridge the gap between Earth science information and society. These projects help both participants and partners learn more about using geospatial information. Projects address priorities and concerns in nine thematic areas:  Agriculture, Climate, Disasters, Ecological Conservation, Energy, Health & Air Quality, Urban Development, Water Resources, and Wildland Fires.

Our program

Three times a year, participants apply through a competitive application process. Those selected conduct 10-week research projects in interdisciplinary teams of 4-5 people. They work closely with DEVELOP science advisors and mentors to apply Earth observations to address real-world problems. Through this process, participants build both research and science communication skills. These skills and project experience help set them up for success in the workforce.

Our partners

DEVELOP partners with organizations interested in integrating Earth observations to inform their environmental decision making. This includes other federal agencies, state and local governments, non-profits, for-profits and others. Each project centers around a partner's decision-making needs. Participants then work to assess how Earth observation data can inform their future decisions and actions.

DEVELOP projects bridge the gap between NASA’s Earth science data and society, addressing environmental concerns and enhancing decision-making to improve life here on Earth.
