Overview:

Hurricane Beryl, the earliest Atlantic basin hurricane to reach Category 5 status , made landfall near Matagorda, Texas around 4 a.m. CDT on July 8th, 2024 as a Category 1 storm. In coastal Texas, Beryl brought sustained winds above 80 mph and storm surge in excess of 5 feet in some locations according to the National Weather Service (NWS) and media reports. The Houston Metro area sustained over 14 inches of rain. Further inland, Beryl generated a historic number of tornadoes as it progressed through Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, and the mid-west.

NASA’s Disaster Program activated to support response for Hurricane Beryl's impacts to the southern U.S., responding to requests from stakeholders including the Texas Division of Emergency Management, NWS Lake Charles Office, NWS Shreveport Office, and FEMA Headquarters.
