Torrential rains on the night of Friday March 31st, 2017, caused three rivers surrounding the southern Colombian city of Mocoa to overflow, sending a torrent of mud and debris surging through the city. At least 254 people were killed. A further 203 people were injured, many severely. This area is highly predisposed to landsliding due to extreme tropical rainfall, extensive deforestation, and steep slopes. NASA precipitation data, landslide susceptibility information, and a global landslide catalog can provide situational awareness into the greater context for this disaster.
