Severe flooding and landslides have been triggered by unusually heavy rains on the Hawaiian Island of Kauai, forcing the evacuation of hundreds of people from their homes.  Landslides triggered by the rain have whipped out homes and shut down the main highway leading to the island’s north shore, stranding residents in the island’s remote areas.  No injuries have been reported, but hundreds of homes are believed to have been severely damaged or destroyed.  Damage assessments are continuing, and the full extent of the disaster’s impacts are not yet known.
