A 6.6 magnitude earthquake hit Japan’s northern-most island of Hokkaido on September 5, 2018. The earthquake's epicenter was near Tomakomai and occurred at a depth of 33.4 kilometers (20.8 mi.) The earthquake disrupted electrical service throughout Hokkaido, leaving 5.3 million residents without power. Currently, 44 people have been confirmed dead and around 640 people were injured.
